About the Item

A masterpiece of adaptability and design, this Pierre Chapo "GO" Modular Shelving Unit in solid elm represents an esteemed end-of-career highlight for the highly influential French designer. Created in 1983, this system stands as a testament to Chapo's enduring vision, offering an infinitely customizable storage solution that is both visually appealing and remarkably versatile. The 'GO' system's ingenious configuration utilizes solid elm panels for its horizontal, vertical, and facade elements, allowing for endless possibilities in arrangement. While visually distinct from some of his earlier, more iconic works, the delicate lines of the doors and uprights unmistakably echo the designer's essential concepts: a profound respect for material, a masterful command of form, and an intuitive understanding of function. Each element contributes to a harmonious and sophisticated composition. In original condition, this substantial shelving unit exhibits some minor, age-appropriate wear consistent with its four decades of use, which only adds to its authentic charm. More than just a bookshelf, this Chapo creation offers a unique opportunity to own a piece of design history, perfectly suited to enhance a discerning home or office with its elegant presence and practical brilliance. Component Dimensions: Left Cabinets Width: 37.75” Middle Cabinets Width: 25.25” Right Cabinets Width: 44” Bottom Cabinets Depth: 18.5” Top Cabinets Depth: 13” Pierre Chapo (1927-1987) remains one of France's most revered and influential furniture designers of the 20th century, celebrated for his profound respect for natural materials, particularly solid wood. Unlike many contemporaries who embraced industrial processes, Chapo was a master craftsman, deeply dedicated to the integrity of wood and traditional joinery techniques, often working with elm. His work is characterized by a strong emphasis on the intrinsic qualities of the material itself, allowing its grain and texture to contribute to the aesthetic. The "GO" system, created in 1983, stands as a fascinating culmination of his career. While it showcases a more linear and adaptable modularity than some of his earlier, more organic forms, it nonetheless embodies his lifelong commitment to the fundamental principles of 'material, form, and function'—a clear highlight demonstrating his evolving yet consistent design philosophy.

Pierre Chapo Large Wall Unit Model B17, French Elm, circa 1967
By Pierre Chapo
Located in Santa Gertrudis, Baleares
Original "B17" bookshelf by Pierre Chapo, circa 1967, in French elmwood. One of the most iconic piece of Pierre Chapo (1927-1986). In 1967, Pierre Chapo presented new creations at the Salon des Arts Ménagers, exhibiting the B17 bookshelf for the first time. This bookcase is fixed to the wall freeing up a lot of living space. The bookshelf, whose presence surprises by its discretion and elegance, by the harmony of the lines between the uprights and the shelves (in 50 mm sections) is accentuated by the originality of the support system. Supports, as their name implies, normally prop up the shelves of a piece of furniture or else the jutting parts of buildings. Pierre Chapo decided not to take this universal law into account and modeled a support that fits into the upright, which means the shelf can be solidly fixed under its support. In a balance between gravity and the forces at play, the more weight goes on the shelf, the better its components slot into the upright. The wall unit is in the French Campagne style...
