1950s Indian Laurel Sideboard by Kelvin McAvoy for Liberty’s

About the Item

Very rare and super stylish sideboard designed by Kelvin McAvoy for the Liberty & Co luxury department store in London. Kelvin McAvoy was an interior designer and painter who studied at the Glasgow School of Art. As a student he became acquainted with the designer to the Queen of Denmark which in turn led him to work for Liberty’s. The sideboard was designed and made in the early 1950s which can be dated by the Utility Scheme stamp on the back and was clearly an important piece as it was featured in a full page colour ad in the Design magazine in 1952. It has a beech frame and legs with doors of Indian laurel that have an incised pattern of various bottle shapes that have been routed through the Indian laurel to reveal the white wood underneath. Inside there is one drawer and two removable shelves.
