American Federal Mahogany Sideboard Cupboard Antique Chest of Drawers

About the Item

A work of highly precise and imaginative craftsmanship, the casework on this chest of drawers is simply outstanding, the underside of the case shows large dovetails locking tenon-mortised frame of the sides into the bottom while large fore-aft braces within the case dovetail the front firmly into the back on either side of the drawers. The bold corner columns fall in a single carved plank of turned and reeded mahogany from the turreted corners of the top through the foot. The case is a delightful mix of mahogany veneers across the front of the case and backsplash while the sides and top are crafted of solid cherrywood. The top is affixed with screws from beneath while the sides panels are set in grooves in the tenon-mortised cherry frame. The front of the case features three small drawers over a pair of wine drawers that flank an open cupboard, this with an original brass latch on the left door and original lock on the right door, retaining original cut brass hinges and screws. The wine drawers are divided into six compartments on either side and are dressed in brilliant golden flamed birch ovular veneers. Two broad lower drawers retain their original locks and key. Each drawer shows precise and tidy craftsmanship with neat dovetailing, the bottom board sliding into grooves in the sides with the original nails tacking the back edges. Around the time the case was quite handsomely refinished, the bail pulls where changed out for a dusty gilded knob on all of the drawers - the tiny holes are perfectly filled and almost invisible except on close examination. Very competent work. The rear feet are in the Federal taste, the tapered foot with a cuffed inlay around the ankle. The petite and unimposing dimension of the case makes it a very fine addition for the smaller dining room, while it also works beautifully as a hall console or cupboard in a living space, circa 1830. Measurements: 20 3/8” D x 44 1/8” W x 48 1/4” H. Condition Report: Repaired crack to left scroll of backsplash - the three screws holding the backsplash have lost some grip and should eventually be replaced. Knobs on case are not original, the original bail pull holes having been filled at some point prior to refinishing. Retaining two original keys. Some filling to cracks in wine drawer veneers. Drawers operate smoothly. Original backboards with later nails. Minor blemishes and wear indicators - overall remaining in gorgeous condition.
