American Federal Style Antique Sideboard in New York Manner, Late 19th Century

About the Item

The vibrant and flowing grains of the mahogany veneers throughout the front of this finely crafted sideboard are selected with precision to create a rib-cage effect in all three sections of the facade - it is an absolutely gorgeous effect that flows through the cabinet doors through the drawers above. The lower two-thirds of the sideboard features a pair of curved cabinet doors flanking a larger central cupboard space with inset curved doors. The three drawers along the top retain original knobs with stamped embossment of Benjamin Franklin, each being hand dovetailed openly along the back edge and hidden beneath the cockbead molding of the front edge; the poplar bottom board is set in grooves along the sides of the polar framing. The entire sideboard rests over six tapering legs with inlaid bellflowers beneath a long inlaid ovular, each column capped with an inlay of alternating light and dark veneers in a manner generally only associated with New York City. For anyone passionate about American Federal forms, this finely hand crafted work from the Centennial period remains in simply gorgeous condition and will certainly be a most cherished part of the formal dining room. Measurements: 25 3/4" D x 37 1/2" H x 61 1/4" W Condition Report: Scuffs to feet, some scratches to the left side of the case (oxidized), light wear to surface throughout from time and use as expected, stringer inlay loss along front edge, other very minor inlay losses or replacements. Original brasses, original locks and hinges; key appears to be original with some slight bend to the shaft. Felt lined interior of the middle drawer with some discoloration.
