Measurements: L. 69 cm - D. 33 cm - H. 93.5 cm (D,SR) D,SF To know more: The Empire Style in furnishings spread to France in 1801 and lasted until 1821. Characteristic for the majesty of the furnishings, designed to enhance the new regime. In the ten years that separate the end of the Louis XVI style and the advent of the Empire, furniture in France was known as the Directoire style. We are witnessing on the one hand a simplification of the forms of Louis XVI and on the other a stiffening of the furniture line which is a prelude to the Empire. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, art became a vehicle for the affirmation of Napoleon's political fortunes. With the Empire, in furnishings, the constant search for shapes and decorations inspired by antiquity, in particular by the world of the Egyptians, the Greeks and the Romans, came to an end: the gilded bronzes were made in the shape of acanthus and vine shoots , wreaths of laurel, oak leaves and flowers, of mythological figures, griffins and sphinxes, stars and palmettes, dancing nymphs. Allegorical designs for the bronzes and gilded carvings are bees (activity in useful work), eagles (imperial dominion), swans (purity of ideals).
