Shopping for antique sideboards can be a confusing affair! Depending upon geography and other factors, quite often many terms get used interchangeably, and for good reason: they are essentially the same thing! Some time ago, the French actually defined a buffet as a small sideboard used for storing dishes. So perhaps a buffet might be a little smaller than a sideboard, or credenza, but it serves basically the same purpose. In all pieces, dishes and serving utensils are stored below with a flat surface above to display and serve prepared food. Some buffets and sideboards feature large mirrored backs with display shelves attached while others have no antique sideboard back at all. The features incorporated depend on the period and styling of the piece. In modern times, a credenza is more often a type of sideboard used in the home or restaurant. In dining rooms, it is typically made from wood and used as a platform to serve buffet meals. The top is often, but not always, made of marble, or another decorative liquid- and heat-resistant stone. Fun Facts re the Origin of the term “Credenza” Originally in Italian the name “credenza” meant belief (linguistically connected to the English word “credence”). In the 16th century the act of “credenza” was the tasting of food and drinks by a servant. The name may simply have passed then to the room where the act took place, then to the furniture itself. This practice continues to present day for people of great power. Even in the not too distant past, President Vladimir Putin has been known to hire a food taster as part of his security staff. In the United States several past presidents, most recently and prominently, Barack Obama, have been rumored to employ food tasters also. Creedence indeed!
