About the Item

Attributed to Thomas Hache - Baroque sideboard, Grenoble, France, 1740s. Made of walnut and other fine woods. Pressed and profiled ball feet, above them a likewise profiled, ebonised strip. Double-door front with large doors extending over the full height of the furniture body. Exceptionally rich and finely crafted marquetries, framed in cartouches, showing splendid flowers and bouquets. The very elaborate use of different wood colours and an ebonised background is particularly noteworthy. Inside there is a shelf and two drawers. The head of the sideboard is profiled. All locks and key plates are original. The marble top plate is also original. Exceptional quality. Thomas Hache (1664 - 1747), who came from a family of cabinetmakers and ébénistes, is considered one of the best of his trade. The history of the Hache carpentry family begins with the founder Noël Hache, born 1635 in Calais. After several years of travelling, Noël settled in Toulouse and founded his first workshop for the production of high-quality furniture. After his death in 1675, his son Thomas left Toulouse and found his fortune with the marriage of a master carpenter's daughter in Grenoble, where he opened a new workshop. A new chapter in the family history has begun. After several very successful years in his profession, he was awarded the title of "Court Cabinetmaker of the Duke of Orleans, Philip II" because of the high quality of his work, and he worked his workshop in Grenoble until his death in 1747. It was during this time that this beautiful piece was created, in which one can clearly see the handwriting of its builder: The combination of Flemish and Italian style using dyed woods. After his death, his son Pierre, and later his sons Jean-François and Christophe-André, continued to run the company, making it one of the most important furniture stores and manufactories in France and Switzerland. It was not until the French Revolution of 1789 that the rise of this extraordinary family of carpenters was halted. Jean-François Hache died in 1796. The history of this dynasty finally ends with the death of his brother Christophe-André in 1831, who died without a male descendant. (Research and text: Art historian Jens J.
