Carlo Marelli & Massimo Molteni 'Tula' Sideboard in Red Birdseye Maple

About the Item

Carlo Marelli and Massimo Molteni for Guiseppe Borghi & Figli, sideboard, model 'Tula', red stained birdseye maple, glass, fine leather, Italy, 1980s This eccentric sideboard has a strong artistic look and hits the border between art and furniture. The two designers Carlo Marelli and Massimo Molteni graduated in Architecture at the ‘Politenico University’ in Milan and right after, in 1977, opened their multi-disciplinary studio that realized projects related to architecture, industrial, graphic and interior design. This sideboard is a good example of excellent woodworking by virtue of the built-in construction featuring shelves executed in transparent glass and, in the middle, a sufficient amount of storage space due to the four elegant-looking drawers accompanied with fine leather handles. The design is executed in a special material named ‘birdseye maple’ consisting of a striking pattern resembling small, swirling eyes that disrupt the smooth lines of grains. This graphical visualization adds a wonderful rhythmic and haptic surface to the front. The sideboard rests on cylindrical shaped legs and are in contrast with the quite solid frame, creating this disharmonic look, which makes this item even have more visual excitement. Taking everything into account, the design convinces visually through the well-balanced appearance and the stabile construction. The sideboard can be placed in the middle of the room or away from the wall, providing the room a lively ambiance.   Please note that this item is in good, used condition with some signs of age and use.
