Bedside table - Green lacquered sideboard Wood type: Fir Period: about 1830 Origin: Alps Dimensions: Height - 82 cm Width - 67 cm Depth - 39 cm Description: This bedside table-sideboard, dating back to the mid-19th century, comes from the Alpine regions of Central Europe and is a typical example of furniture made with traditional materials and artisan techniques. The structure is made of fir wood, a type of wood commonly used in Alpine furniture for its workability and resistance to climatic variations. The construction is simple and functional, with sturdy joints and an essential appearance, typical of furniture intended for everyday use. The entire surface is characterized by a dark green lacquer, and the wear of time has led to the natural abrasion of the finish, revealing in several places the underlying reddish preparation layer, a detail that adds depth and authenticity to the original patina. This type of varnish was widespread in the Alpine areas, both for aesthetic and protective reasons, as it helped to preserve the wood from humidity and atmospheric agents. From a structural point of view, the piece of furniture has a vertical configuration with a slightly molded base, which provides greater stability. The upper surface, simple and linear, houses a recessed drawer with a central knob. Just below, a door with a framed panel dominates the lower part of the piece of furniture, equipped with a lock with a shaped brass plate. This piece of furniture perfectly embodies the nineteenth-century Alpine style: essential, functional and decorated with sobriety. The combination of simple shapes, natural materials and colored lacquers reflects the taste and tradition of the mountain communities of Central Europe, where furniture was not only a piece of furniture, but also an artifact intended to last over time.
