English George IV Green Painted Antique Pedestal Sideboard Console, circa 1825
A striking pedestal sideboard with an overall green ground polychrome surface against gilded highlights, the sideboard is knock-down for easy and safe transport. The arched backdrop is enhanced with a large classical genre scene of figures conversing, the curvature perfectly matches the demilune of the central bridge with its pair of floral decorated drawers flanking a small freize drawer with a crisp genre painting of sheep in a golden field before a castle. This locks into the pedestals on either side with large dowels and screws from the inside coupled with the backdrop, which also screws into the sides. Both pedestals are capped with scrolled backsplashes with beige ground over a pink fan. These are symmetrically decorated with exquisite paintings of conversing shepherds and goatherds as well as sprawling country landscapes. The right pedestal has a wine drawer and the left a shelved cabinet (perhaps adjusted from formerly being a drawer) over shelved cabinet space on either side, these surrounded by powerful spiral columns over turned feet. Provenance: Deaccessioned from Philadelphia Museum of Art, acc. no. 46-89-1 Sotheby's, New York, 11 October 1996, "Important English Furniture and Decorations”, lot 164. Measurements: 67” W x 22 3/4” D x 46 3/4” H. Condition report: Professionally conserved, painted surface and gilding refreshed throughout. Painted panels of a later date. Minor nicks, dings and chips to the wood; chips above keyholes. Old shrinkage cracks in side of case. Numerous additional screw holes and later screws for securing parts together, the sideboard disassembles for safe transportation.
