Franco Poli Sideboard from Scaligera Series in Walnut by Bernini 1980s

About the Item

Sideboard in walnut wood from the Scaligera series designed by Franco Poli for Bernini in the 1980s. The sideboard presents doors with inner shelves, drawers, and flap-opening compartments on the top. The high carpentry on which this sideboard was produced, is evident in every little detail of this magnificent piece of furniture, from the beautiful detail of the handles drawers to the peculiar curved central door. The manufacturer's logo is impressed on the sideboard surface. The designer Franco Poli was born in Padua in 1950. He studied art and architecture in Venice, where he met Isamu Noguchi and Buckminster Fuller. At the age of 23, his first industrial design was produced. In 1977 he worked with Bernini s.p.a., becoming artistic director from 1979 to 2009. In the eighties, he opened a studio in Venice and was called a visiting professor to the U.I.A [International University of Art] in Florence and the Milan Polytechnic. From 1989 to 1996 he held the DESIGN course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. In the nineties, he collaborated in the foundation of numerous regional associations, a transnational Design school in Reggio Calabria, and the national coordination of the C.N.A.D. Design Associations in Rome. In recent years he has held several meetings on Design in S. Paolo, Tokyo, Quito, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Miami, Moscow, New York, Kiev, London, and Shanghai. His products are in the permanent collections of The Denver Art Museum, the “Fonds National d’Art Contemporain” in Paris, the “Magma Museum” in Roccamonfina, the “Farnesina Design” and the Triennale Design Museum in Milan. He has won the “Good Design Award” of the Chicago Athenaeum three times, in 2007 he won the “DesignX, Australian Award” and in 2008 was awarded an Honourable Mention at the XXI Compasso D’Oro. From 2007 to 2010 he furnished the reception areas at the Venice Biennale of Art and Architecture. By Gaetano Pesce, Bernini
Located in Montecatini Terme, IT
The Luigi 902 (O mi amate voi?) shelf, with a lacquered wood frame and a metal base, was designed by Gaetano Pesce and produced by Bernini in 1981. The Luigi 902 is a free-standing shelf with a double frame in wood and metal and two tilting shelves that can be blocked in a horizontal position through a screws system placed directly on the frame. When the shelves are down the bookcase functions like a screen or a divider The base of the wooden structure has a metal reinforcement to ensure balance and stability. Gaetano Pesce is a prominent contemporary Italian designer and architect known for his bold experimentation with materials and color. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with some of Italy's leading design companies, including Artemide, Vitra, Cassina, and B&B Italia. Born in 1939 in La Spezia, near Genoa, Pesce enrolled at the University of Venice in 1959 to study architecture and graduated in 1965. During the final years of his studies, he also participated in courses at the Venice College of Industrial Design, where he was influenced by distinguished faculty members like Ernesto Nathan Rogers and Mario Bellini. Encouraged by their teachings to embrace innovation in modern design, Pesce became involved with an avant-garde architectural collective called “Gruppo N,” which drew inspiration from the streamlined aesthetics of the Bauhaus. These diverse inspirations equipped Pesce to embrace contemporary materials and explore the forms they enabled. His designs range from small decorative objects to large architectural spaces and reflect deep contemplation of the modern era. Notable works include his iconic La Mamma chair...
