George III Period Serpentine Front Sideboard with Brass Rail

About the Item

George III period serpentine front sideboard with brass rail, English. Circa 1780. Oval lion mask brass pulls. Central long drawer over stunning sun inlaid spandrels; flanked by two deep cellarette drawers. The top and each drawer front with satinwood crossbanding - on the top accented by ebony & boxwood stringing, on the drawer fronts by checkered stringing. The drawer fronts with satinwood fan inlaid corners. Raised on line inlaid straight tapered cuffed legs. Turned brass rail with acorn shape finials. Mahogany with oak secondary wood. 36 5/8" h. to surface. 84" x 28.75" x 51 7/8" h. overall.

This is a superb antique George III inlaid flame mahogany serpentine sideboard, circa 1790 in date. With wood banding and marquetry spandrels, the central frieze drawer flanked by deep drawers, the right side drawer with divisions for bottles. The drawers fitted with the original and beautiful ormolu lion's head ring handles. It is raised on elegant square tapering legs on spade feet and is complete with working locks and key. Add an elegant touch to a special place in your home with this superb antique serpentine shaped sideboard. The botanical name for the mahogany this item is made of is Swietenia macrophylla and this type of mahogany is not subject to CITES regulation. Provenance: Major Edward Croft-Murray, Perivale, Ryde, Isle of Wight. From the collection of Edward Croft-Murray CBE (1907-1980).
