About the Item

This is a signed Gustave Herter sideboard (of Herter Brothers later on) in the Renaissance revival style of the middle of the 1800s during the gilded age. The sideboard is so magnificent and beautifully carved that it's really a true work of art. The figures are gilded and the carving is the best possible from one of teh best American cabinetmakers ever known. The piece is in good original finish and condition and features embossed tooled leather surfaces and a grand scale that makes even some large sideboards seem impossibly small by comparison. The piece is absolutely stunning. Measures 59.5 tall x 66.5 wide x 22.5 deep. and Gustave Herter, a cabinetmaker, immigrated to the United States in 1848, followed by his brother Christian in 1859. In 1864, they established Herter Brothers, initially as a furniture and upholstery shop/warehouse, but soon expanded to offer complete interior decoration services.
