About the Item

Tall sideboard or Trumeau with Lift (May 1964): The beautiful inlaid decoration, crafted from various essences of natural polychrome woods, appears to be inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite movement. The lift's panel features representations of books, lanterns, and various objects, along with a still life of autumn fruits, curiously observed by a squirrel. The motif of the lemon, with its peel curling away from the fruit, connects to 17th-century Dutch painting, while the overall perspective recalls the inlays of Fra Giovanni da Udine, admired by the artist in his youth at the Church of Santa Maria in Organo in Verona. Drawing inspiration from the 18th-century style of Piedmontese cabinetmakers, Ferrandi creates a bar cabinet consisting of three sections, favoring a moderately curved line in the base and the drop-down middle section. A carved edge with stylized motifs outlines the lower part and the multiliniear pediment of the lift. Inlaid decorations run throughout the cabinet, elegantly framing the beautiful central inlay. Cornelio Ferrandi, an inlay painter and a man of color and taste, was born in Treviglio in 1913. For Cornelio Ferrandi, inlay was a means, not an end; not merely a suggestion, but a moment of true poetry. It was not just an example of expression, but rather the joy of rediscovery of oneself. In his inlays, as in his paintings, one can see that wandering through fantasy, which is central to his discourse, so full and never redundant that it becomes the driving force of his artistic exploration.
