About the Item
This is a large antique brown Tansu chest from Japan. While black lacquered finishes are more common, a Tansu with this warm brown tone is highly unusual and therefore particularly rare. Crafted during the Meiji period (1860s–1900s), it is made of Japanese cedar. The soft, rich grain of the cedar has matured over time, developing a calm patina and a deep, refined character.
The design is striking in its simplicity, stripped of all excess ornamentation. It perfectly embodies the essence of “simplicity,” with a clean and disciplined structure that exudes sophistication even in modern interiors. The front features sliding doors with vertical latticework, emphasizing the beauty of straight lines. Light and shadow play delicately across the surface, creating ever-changing impressions that shift with the angle and illumination—subtle expressions of tranquil beauty.
The sliding doors move smoothly, maintaining full functionality as a practical piece of furniture.
