About the Item
This is a large antique Japanese Tansu chest, crafted during the Meiji period (1860s–1900s). It is made from cedar wood, known for its lightweight yet durable qualities.
The design is remarkably simple, characterized by clean lines and a complete absence of superfluous ornamentation. Its minimal construction perfectly embodies the essence of simplicity, bringing a sense of calm and quiet dignity to any space. Decades of careful repairs and devoted use are reflected in its surface, where fine scratches and subtle variations in tone have developed over time, enhancing its uniqueness and presence.
A particularly distinctive feature is found on the lower right corner of the left sliding door—a small gnaw mark made long ago by a mouse. This area has been repaired with a piece of weathered, rusted tin, whose rugged texture harmonizes beautifully with the entire piece. Rather than appearing as a mere repair, it feels like an intentional design element, revealing a refined aesthetic sensibility.
The sliding doors open and close smoothly, making it fully functional for everyday use. Its spacious interior offers ample storage, making it a practical piece for modern living as well.
The chest has already been carefully cleaned, so it is ready for immediate use upon arrival. Even after more than a century, it retains a commanding presence, serving as a true embodiment of Japan’s wabi-sabi philosophy—bringing quiet strength and timeless beauty to any space.
Weight: approx. 35 kg

Our Philosophy
Objects always tell the truth.
All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give
them deep affection as much as I can.
There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty.
But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it
will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing
today and to question us about an essence of beauty again.
I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have,
feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
