About the Item

Exceptional Boulle inlay coin set bearing the signature "Susse Frères," Paris, Napoleon III era, circa 1870. This rare jewel belongs to the luxurious production of the Victor and Amedée Susse brothers: very rich three-sided "Boulle"-type ornamentation with red tortoiseshell, brass, and ebony inlays reproducing arabesque, acanthus, and palmette motifs taken from the decorative repertoire of 17th-century ornamentists such as Jean Bérain (1638-1711). A small gilded bronze key opens it, revealing an interior organized into small drawers, themselves inlaid with red tortoise fillets and bone. It rests on four feet in the shape of anthropomorphic caryatids in chiseled and gilded bronze, as does the magnificent handle, which depicts a coiled snake. The signature "Susse Frères" is engraved on the lock. Mint condition. Measurements W cm 25 D cm 14 H cm 20 Biography Confirming their success during the famous Industrial Products Exhibitions in Paris, the Susse brothers, Victor (1806-1860) and Amédée (1808-1880) introduced themselves starting in 1841 as manufacturers of "Art bronzes for clocks, candelabras, vases, figurines, etc." Located on Place de la Bourse in Paris, they also present "furniture, mounted china, and objets d'art" on the second floor of their luxurious store. Maison Susse, a world-renowned foundry, began producing bronzes in the first half of the 19th century. France's greatest sculptors entrusted them with the bronze casting of their sculptural works, such as Pradier who signed the oldest known publishing contract in 1841. After the death of the two brothers, Albert Susse succeeded them as director of the firm from 1880 to 1922.
