Mongolian Walnut Coffer, c. 1850

About the Item

This 19th-century Mongolian storage coffer balances a streamlined silhouette with textured, wabi-sabi materials. Also referred to as a herdsman's chest, the four-door sideboard is expertly crafted of walnut using mortise-and-tenon joinery, without the use of nails or screws. Originally configured to open from the top, the cabinet has been modified with front-facing doors and an interior shelf, with elegant bridle joinery visible at the corners of each door. Beautifully proportioned, the coffer is enveloped in a rich brown lacquer stippled with wear from years of use. Clean-lined and timeless, the coffer is finished with full moon brass lock plates and a smooth patina that calls to be touched.
