About the Item

A Sheraton style mahogany demi-lune console sideboard from England c.1880. The shape of this cabinet is most unusual and gives it a definite allure when choosing it to place within an interior. The shape, "demi-lune", is the French term for half moon as this particular shape appeared to great acclaim in late eighteenth century France where its clean and simple lines were in line with the prevailing Neoclassical taste in furnishing. The shape was of course quickly adopted in England where its unique capacity to offer both serving and storage in areas where space was at a premium was highly desirable. This particular sideboard is sheathed entirely in mahogany veneers with the grain placed in opposition to each adjoining panel. This technique magnifies the effect of the grain and provides visual distinction without resorting to carving or painting. The top surface extends slightly beyond the lower section to offer balance and proportion while the entire facade is given over to providing access to the entire interior of the cabinet. There is a curved cabinet door on both the left and right opened by pulling on the original lion head brass pull. The centre of the two cabinet doors is defined by a raised line of moulding creating a circle. Inside the moulding the mahogany features a flame grain pattern with a bold and organic sense of movement. Outside the circular moulding the mahogany features a striped grain and four separate pieces have been chosen to abut one another at a ninety degree angle. The stripes capture and reflect light in a distinctly different way giving a rippled effect when seen. Between the two doors there are two drawers with the top drawer featuring an oval raised moulding that frames the pair of brass lion head pulls. Within the oval the grain of the mahogany is also flamed while outside the stripe design is repeated. Placed directly beneath the top drawer is another drawer that is opened by pulling on the underside of the lip. Again, the contrast between the striped mahogany on the raised section of the drawer and the flame pattern on the recessed area sets the decorative effect. The entire cabinet stand upon four tapered legs that each terminate in a spade foot. The balance between the shape of the legs and the volume of the body of the cabinet is quite pleasing from any angle or direction from which the cabinet is seen. Quite frankly it is the simplicity of the construction and the luxurious quality of the mahogany that elevates this piece for inclusion in a twenty-first century interior.
