About the Item

One of a kind enfilade or large sideboard with a horizontal structure made of wood, with wonderful inlay work, by the famous Italian designer Vittorio Dassi during the 1950s. It stands out for the use of different precious woods that give the piece a rich variety tone and due to the inlays so typical of the inlay technique. Likewise, what most captures our attention is the magnificent scene that runs along the front of the long piece of furniture. In this English hunting scene, the artist's skill in composing the bodies of the characters stands out, as well as the ability to simulate perspective on the flatness of the wood. The beautiful landscape made up of trees, rock formations and various architectural components, as well as an action that, although starring several characters, is mainly characterized by the presence of animals, guarantee the scene's absolute communion with nature. On the other hand, the artisanal value of this Italian enfilade is more than undeniable. In the upper part, the top of the sideboard is made of dark glass that also contributes to the unique chromatic play of this work. Furthermore, despite being a robust piece of furniture, it does not convey that sensation thanks to the legs that make it levitate off the ground, and the oval Portuguese pink marble base on which it rests and which, in the same way, raises it off the ground. It has a large storage capacity, it is made up of three sections with two folding doors each. It is planned as a bar cabinet, therefore, in the central area you can see the mirror, a glass shelf and two lower registers. In addition, light has been added, something typical of the furniture-bar of this time. This diaphanous interior is made of light-colored fruit wood. The keys to the furniture bear the signature "Dassi - Mobili Moderni". Victor Dassi (1893 - 1973) Vittorio Dassi was an Italian post-war and contemporary artist who was born in 1893. Dassi's furniture, made between the 1940s and 1950s, is distinguished by the choice of precious woods such as rosewood, cherry, ash, and walnut, often decorated with inlaid panels and crystals signed by great glass masters. Elegant in design, and without losing functional quality, his furniture can be combined with the refined style of Gio Ponti, to whom Vittorio was linked by important collaborations after taking over from his father at the Dassi Mobili company. Among the most important projects of the factory is, in fact, the realization of the furniture for the rooms of the Hotel Royal in Naples, designed by Ponti in the mid-50s, a period that marks the turning point of Dassi towards forms more schematics and teak wood for the production of modular furniture. In general, Italian modernist designers continued to be deeply attached to and influenced by their craft tradition. But his contribution to the definition of modernism was decisive also and above all because it was defined by a considerable dose of artistic liberalism. The aesthetic diversity within the village itself was great: pieces like this 1960s desk in steel and rosewood by Gianni Moscatelli for Formanova seem to marry Danish and Dutch elements; while the legendary Gio Ponti created designs in oak, mahogany and ant that exude an exquisitely Italian sensibility; and again, Vittorio Dassi's mid-century desks, with their contrasting materials and shapes, illustrate another new Italian modernist feature. About the technique The inlay is an artisan technique that is applied to the coating of floors, furniture, walls, sculptures or various surfaces and artistic objects. For its realization, pieces cut from different materials such as wood, shell, ivory, mother-of-pearl or even metals are used. These small pieces fit together on a support in order to configure a specific design or decoration, as if it were a puzzle. In short, it is a completely complex and laborious embedding task. The key to configuring the designs and that the different pieces can be clearly differentiated from each other is in the use of different shades. With the alternation of materials of different colors or shades, a chromatic play and contrast is achieved which, in the case of being made with different stones, adopts the name of "mosaics".
