Although no specific pieces of Gothic furniture documented as by Duncan Phyfe have come to light, there is considerable evidence that he, like various of his contemporaries in New York, embraced the Gothic style. 19th century French Henri II neoclassical walnut confiturier, cabinet is a stellar example of the petite buffet with one door affectionately called the confiturier because of its original design being intended to store confit jars in the kitchen. At some point it became obvious that a very useful miniature buffet like this would be ideal for other rooms, and the genre blossomed. This example, rendered from sumptuous French walnut, features neoclassical architecture including turned columns carved with fletching on the face fitted with Doric capitals on each cornerpost, flanking the stylized pyramidal heraldic crest on display in full relief at the center of the cabinet door. Fletching also appears on the drawer facade above, with the entire affair graced with fine molded detail.

This beautiful Empire style commode has obviously been used, but the condition is good to excellent. It has a beautifu warm color, but we have never seen this exotic wood ( burl/burr )with the leopard like dots. This unique chest is practical in size, marvelous in shape and the beautiful, gilt bronze Empire style elements also are wonderful to look at. The practical drawers with the stylish and top-class bronze handles, the wonderfully shaped legs with the bronze feet, the original marble top with its natural lines/veins, they all make this antique commode extra special.
All drawers still run smoothly, they are very clean on the inside (made of solid oak) and they all come with the original, uniquely designed and perfectly fitted, brass handles and key. Because of the size of the drawers, this one of a kind commode can hold a whole lot. Moreover, it is as stabile as the day it was made and thanks to its pleasing design it can be used in all sorts of interiors and for all kinds of purposes.
