About the Item
A Large and Exquisite Antique French 19th Century Dore Bronze Mounted Mahogany Veneered Vitrine/Cabinet, Signed by P (Paul) Sormani. Truly a masterpiece, this bombe form extra wide vitrine/cabinet is beautiful with an extra large center panel which is flanked by four other panels, each with curved glass sides. The legs and body are all beautifully curved and mounted with fantastic quality dore bronze mounts, each set into the veneered panels. The top of the vitrine is beautifully complete with a large slab of hand-carved marble of the best quality. The mounts are all beautifully cast, hand-chassed and hand-chiseled with beautiful mercury gilding and rococo form. The beautiful center panel opens outward to multiple glass shelves, which allow for other gorgeous items to be displayed beautifully. The Lock on the Interior of the Center Panel is signed: "P Sormani".

Paul Sormani was one of the most renowned 19th-century French cabinet makers and Bronzier of the highest quality. He established his firm in 1847 at 7 Cimetière Saint-Nicolas in Paris. He participated in major international exhibitions of 1855, 1862 and 1867. Sormani was awarded a bronze medal in 1849 and a first-class medal in 1855. At the Universal Exhibition of 1867, his work has been described as “A quality of workmanship of the highest order."

Paul Sormani
Paul Sormani, counted among the most elite Parisian ébénistes of the 19th century, used the foundation of Louis XV and XVI styles for his meubles de luxe (luxurious furnishings).
Sormani received enormous attention as one of Paris’ finest and most influential ébénistes and earned worldwide acclaim by displaying his pieces at many of the world’s leading exhibitions. At the 1867 Exhibition Universelle in Paris the celebrated designer received an award and was described in the exhibition journal as “...a distinguished ébéniste of Paris, whose works deservedly attracted the attention of the public, and received the marked approval of the connoisseur.”
Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, decorated her palaces with beautiful creations by Paul Sormani whose designs were of a select few favored by the Empress. Revivals of Louis XV and XVI pieces were in high demand among affluent Parisians, and Sormani created many of the finest and most important furnishings of the period.
