French Hunting Showcases, 'Vitrine' Louis XIII Style 19th Century France
About the Item
Original showcase composed of 2 parts dating from the 19th century. This hunting showcase is used to store trophies and rifles. The whole thing is made of a dark wood.
The lower part rests on 4 square feet. The lower part is decorated with two friezes with plant scrolls. It opens on a door decorated with carved shells and volutes. It also opens onto a drawer also decorated with carved foliage. The jambs are two detached twisted columns. At the top of these columns are floral motifs.
The upper part opens onto a glass door with scrollwork. The jambs are the same as the lower part. The whole is surmounted by a frieze decorated with foliage and a coat of arms in the centre. At the ends are sculptures in high relief representing a dog and a boar. Finally, the whole is surmounted by a cornice decorated with foliage in a frieze.

Reliquaries have been used to store relics since the Middle Ages. In sacred architecture they are often located behind the main altar in the chancel.
