Carved "Bodensee" wardrobe Southern Germany (Lake Constance region) lime tree, spruce Louis XVI, circa 1790 Dimensions: H x W x D: 195 cm x 158 cm x 56 cm Description: Cupboards corpus made of solid spruce standing on fluted square feet. Beveled pilaster strips with volute, curtain and star carving. Doors hung on fittings hinges in frame construction and lime wood. Fillings richly carved with fruit festoons and garlands, as well as urn vases standing on consoles. The fillings are framed with floral carvings ending in volutes at the top. Also artistically carved central moulding. Semicircular gable with egg stick frieze typical of the time. This so-called split cabinet can be divided in the middle. Very typical for the area around Constance Lake! Condition: Ready to live, restored condition. The wood was "embedded" with shellac. The shelves have been reproduced. Eller - Möbel des Klassizismus, Louis XVI and Empire p. 163-165 Something interesting about the Louis XVI epoche: All over Europe the classicism epoch is generally known as Louis-XVI. In Germany at this time, especially in rural areas, furniture is built in a significantly different way than in France. Local woods are used and the furniture is decorated with carved garlands, friezes and galleries. The epoch Louis-XVI is named after the French king Louis-XVI, in whose reign (1774-1792) the style is expressed. Classicism is introduced by major changes in the structure of the furniture body, as well as by innovations in the decorations. In the period from 1770-1790, the early classicist style started in France and soon was famous all over Europe. It first influenced architecture and then became common in furniture making. In the Louis-XVI, the calm, linear form comes into its own again. While the curved form, sweeps and curves were still modern in Louis-XV, in classicism the strict geometrical order in the object was returned. Mergers of individual elements gave way to a clear structure. Straight lines and right-angled surfaces take over creative functions. Clear symmetry and architectural structures characterize the furniture construction of this period. Ornamentation includes vegetal motifs in the form of floral tendrils, flowers, leaves and garlands. Fluted and bevelled corners complement the appearance of the classicist furniture as well as conical square pointed feet or round pointed feet. This wardrobe is a perfect example for German Louis XVI epoche!
