About the Item

A french provincial cabinet or armoire, so-called wedding cabinet. Normandy, end of the 18th century. Solidly made in oak with beautiful carvings. Traditionally in the 18th century, cabinets of this type were brought into marriage as a dowry for the bride and were usually the most valuable item in a household. High rectangular two-door oak corpus with 3 cassettes on each side and a cassette back. Rounded fluted pilasters and carved, multi-curved plinth apron ending in slightly s-shaped curved feet. Doors in frame construction, each hung on 3 large external fittings, carved with floral bouquets among other things, with curved, sawn-out fillings. Stop rail on the left door. The floral motif of the carved decoration continues on the cornice and is extended here by 2 birds with fruit branches in their beaks under the overlying wreath with acanthus leaf frieze. Interior optionally with 3 shelves, or one shelf with a clothes rail. Original bronze fittings mounted. Dimensions: 225 cm high / 88.58 inch high, 139 cm or 160 cm (headboard) wide / 54.72 inch or 62.99 inch (headboard) wide, 54 cm or 64 cm (headboard) deep / 21.25 inch or 25.19 inch (headboard) deep. Interior depth: 47,5 cm / 18.7 inch. Good functional condition with slight signs of use including some visible repairs (e.g. new lower bottom inside). The lock is no longer original. The locking latch on the inside of the left door was added later. The entire surface of the cabinet has been polished with wax. The cabinet can be disassembled into several parts for transport (stud construction) and assembled with wooden connections and wooden dowels.
