The style originated in and takes its name from the rule of Napoleon I in the First French Empire, where it was intended to idealize Napoleon's leadership and the French state. The style corresponds to the Biedermeier style in the German-speaking lands, Federal style in the United States and to the Regency style in Britain. The previous style was called Louis XVI style, in France. The Empire style was based on aspects of the Roman Empire. It is the second phase of neoclassicism which is also called "Directoire", after a government system. Furniture typically had symbols and ornaments borrowed from the glorious ancient Greek and Roman empires. The furniture was made from heavy woods such as mahogany and ebony, imported from the colonies, with dark finishes often with decorative bronze mounts. Marble tops were popular as were Egyptian motifs like sphinxes, griffins, urns and eagles and the Napoleonic symbols, the eagle, the bee, the initials "I" and a large "N." Gilded bronze (ormolu) details displayed a high level of craftsmanship. Flame mahogany Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works...

19th Century French Renaissance Hunt Buffet ~ Vaisselier

19th Century French Renaissance Hunt Buffet ~ Vaisselier is a marvelous work of the wood sculptor's art! Hand-crafted and carved from dense, old-growth white oak, it features a classical architecture that is embellished with bold full relief carvings from the crown to the base. The theme is a celebration of the bounty of nature and the spoils of the hunt, with amazingly realistic renderings including a stag, rabbit and boar. Two display shelves atop the main almost unfettered surface provide display options, and are upheld by lavishly scrolled and carved supports. A tier of drawers separates the serving surface from the spacious pair of cabinet doors below, all sumptuously carved and including lions' heads serving as the drawer pulls. Bold molding and bun feet complete the look. This design has proven very popular as a drink station...

Located in Morristown, NJ

To each side of the door are two beautifully carved panels. The door has brass hinges and escutcheon. It locks with the key retained. The carving is mirrored on both sides of the piece, each comprising five carved panels. The red undertones suggest that this is a chestnut rather than an oak piece. The overall structure owes much to the Gothic Revival movement of 19th century France, with a nod to Renaissance Revival. The door panel is dominated by a lovely example of Gothic tracery in the form of a half moon “window...
