About the Item

A Very Fine Quality 18th Century, Chippendale Period, Georgian Mahogany Serpentine Shaped Tea Table, Retaining Exceptional Colour & Patina Throughout, The Shaped Foldover Top With Exceptional Crisp Carving To Edge, Over Superbly Figured Frieze With Attractive Pierced Fretwork Carved Corner Brackets, Raised On Elegant Square Chamfered Legs With Further Carved And Moulded Decoration. This chippendale period mahogany serpentine tea table, which is basically the same as a georgian card table except without the baized interior, is quite exceptional in all possible respects. Clearly originating from one of the top London workshops of the 18th century every last detail is the best it could be. It is constructed from a superb grade of rich mahogany timbers which have retained a lovely colour and surface, plus the figuring has been very delibarately chosen and laid in a specific fashion for maximum decorative effect. Further to the choice of timbers the quality of the overall consruction, particularly the various areas of carved decoration, is quite superb. In fact the crispness of the carving is right up there with anything we have previously come across from this period. This table could of course be used for its original purpose of bringing out into the middle of a room and opening up to serve from, or any other use which is required from a decent sized table top. But it is also worth bearing in mind that it serves as a lovely console table, or side table with the top shut. As with all items which we offer for sale this table has been inspected by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish to ensure it is ready for immediate placement and use following purchase. Circa 1760. Height 28.5in. Width 33in. Depth 16in.
