About the Item

This is an exceptional work of art, an American Chippendale Mahogany Card Table from Pennsylvania circa the last quarter of the 18th Century, likely crafted between 1775-85. It is remarkably well preserved, almost entirely untouched other than regular maintenance of the finish through periodic and regular waxing - the finish beneath is possibly not original, or at least partially restored, but is quite early and oxidized with a fine patina. Every aspect of the table is original, including the highly delicate C-Scroll returns that flank each leg - these are replaced or damaged with high frequency due to their precarious nature, particularly the left rear bracket, as this is only secured at the table frame and does not attach to the gating leg. Clearly the table remained in one area without being moved or roughly handled for much of it's life. The top is crafted of broad solid planks of mahogany, each just under an inch thick and spanning the entire depth of 17 3/4" without a second board. The figure is warm and flowing, a rich pudding surface that is even more evident on the cleaner "game" surface. The top lifts over original hinges to rest on the gating back leg, this crafted with golden oak making up both ends of the knuckled board, tenoned into the rear left leg and pinned with two wooden pegs. A single drawer pulls out from the front with an outstanding Rococo pair of brasses, likely imports from England and fully original, the edge of the drawer lined with a thin cockbead molding to give shape to the drawer. The drawer is framed with poplar secondaries, the deeply chamfered bottom sliding into rabbets along the sides with triangular cedar blocks running the chamfered edges; the drawer is nailed along the back edge. Beneath the drawer, a thin molding finishes the angular form, dividing the weight of the table from the void of the legs. Easing this void are the foliage inspired C-Scroll carved returns, softening the sharp transition to the molded Marlborough legs, these chamfered on their innermost edge and free of embellishment or decoration. The interior of the table is spotless, each hand filed steel screw preserved and unmoved, original roseheads affixing the yellow pine frame to the golden oak gate leg structure, the runners oxidized brown and original blocking still retained. Free of repairs, restorations and replacements, this susceptible form is in a quite fine and rather rare state of preservation. Measurements: [closed] 36" wide x 17 3/4" deep x 29 7/8" high [opened] 36" wide x 35 7/8" deep x 29" high Materials: (not by microanalysis) Primary Woods: Mahogany [tops, primary case, legs, molding] Secondary Woods: Golden Oak [gate leg frame], Yellow Pine [back board of frame, runners, interior blocking], Cedar [triangular blocks under drawer bottom], Poplar [drawer sides and bottom] Condition: Very fine - only changes over time are finish, a possibly replaced dowel through the knuckle joint and waxing. Parts of the finish are very early, possibly original, well preserved beneath many later layers of wax. Nicks and dings to surface throughout, including the legs and top - the topmost board has scars, burns, finish discolorations and numerous abrasions. It remains very attractive with a deep and warm patina. Interior boards are in outstanding condition, the lower board with a shallow "split" through the burl of the mahogany - this is not a stress related crack, but rather was selected for the table with this, giving the board great character in a rare cut of the tree. Drawer has original lock w/ original nails in place - no key. Original gilt hardware. Drawer underside missing two cedar blocks. Overall sturdy and strong.
