About the Item

A very fine presentation piece that transforms from a breakfast table into a tilted strike point that can be tucked into the corner, little expense has been spared in designing and executing this exquisite table. The use of contrast dominates the design, the warmer cognac hue of mahogany in the open table surface is set against the cross-banded exotic Coromandel top with its chaotic graining, the two woods separated by thin satinwood stringer inlays. Years of polishing, careful use and grime build-up in the wax have rendered a deep and glowing patina throughout, this contrasts against the much darker hue of the solid mahogany pedestal with its robust ring turnings. A large set of brass hardware on the underside allows the top to be released and flip upwards. Affixed with an original iron bracket, the four sabre legs curve outward and terminate in cast brass lion paw castors, each original and well detailed. Throughout the base, the old finish has oxidized and blackened such that the ebony inlays along all three surfaces of each leg become almost invisible. This is a simply exquisite acquisition for anyone passionate about early English objects, remaining in fine original condition throughout and having enviable color and surface patination. Provenance: Sotheby’s, The Keil Sale, Olympia W04872, 22 July 2004, lot 330, achieved 4800 GBP ($ 8847 USD) Measurements: 55 3/4” W x 35 1/4” D x 28 7/8” H Condition report: A few pieces of veneer replaced in the Coromandel cross-banding; some repairs to stringer inlay; some patching to ebony inlay around edge of top. Old surface with beautiful color throughout, some staining/wear/discoloration as expected. Old shrink crack in top repaired from underside with a butterfly dovetail. Sturdy and stable.
