About the Item

A Rare Early 19th Century Regency Period Kingwood Rectangular Card Games Table, Having Superbly Figured Foldover, Swivel, Top With Attractive Yew Wood Crossbanded Decoration, Enclosing Baized Playing Surface, Over Panelled Frieze With Central Set Brass Patrae, Raised On Four Ebonised Turned Upright Supports And Unusual, Elegant Swept Scrolling Supports With Original Parcel Gilded Metal Paw Feet. This is a fabulous example of a Regency Card Table, unusually veneered with well figured Kingwood and Yew wood veneers. It boasts real class and elegance to its design and the all of the materials used for its construction are of the highest quality. The four turned supports and feet create a real contrast and the table itself is just incredibly elegant and capable of making a real statement. Overall its in very good condition with very little historic damage to speak of other than the expected old marks, scuffs, scrapes and minor scratches which have of course now blended in with the overall surface of the piece. The ebonisation and gilding has been sympathetically refreshed at some stage as well. The baize surface comtained within is in reasonable condition and perfectly functional, but should one wish then this could easily be changed out for new baize or even a leather surface. The original purpose of a Card Table was to stand at the side of a room and act effectively as a side, or console type table, with the ability to be pulled out into the middle of a room and opened up to allow gaming at a moments notice. Often they were part of a suite, or pair and this would also involve a table of identical design aside from having a wooden surface inside, as opposed to the baized playing surface. Card games amongst other things was of course a popular pastime during the 18th and 19th centuries, so of course whenever one was entertaining it would be almost certain that your card table would be brought out into use. It was therefore important to people to ensure that the card tables they owned were exactly as they wanted them to be and the overall design, or quality, was felt to be befitting of their social status at the time. As with all items we offer for sale the 19th century kingwood card table has been inspected by our highly skilled, well trained, traditional antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish to ensure it is ready for immediate placement after purchase. Circa 1825. Height 28.5in. Width 36in. Depth 18in. Unusual Regency Mahogany Tea Table
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A Very Good Quality 19th Century, Regency Period Mahogany Tea Table, Having Superbly Figured Foldover Top With Banded Decoration And Well Figured Interior Retaining Good Surface And Patina, Above Elegantly Figured Frieze With Matchstick Fluted Decoration, Raised On Rare Extravagant Turned Sabre Legs With Carved Scrolling Decoration To Feet. As suggested by the name, tea tables were made to serve tea from. Often part of a pair, with an identical matching card table, or even a wider suite of furniture they would simply stand to one side in a room and be pulled out, then opened up when required to allow for the placement of trays containing all that is required to serve tea from. Now of course aside from its original purpose this table suits a whole variety of different spaces around the home. It could be used as a console table, a pier table, a simple side table or even as a card games table. Constructed from well figured, high grade mahogany which would have been expensive to purchase in the late 18th century it is incredibly elegant and very good quality. Clearly a lot of effort has gone into the overall look of the table and the cabinet making has been well executed. The legs are quite spectacular, a design which we have actually never come across before. They are certainly something very special and, dare we say it, possibly even a unique feature, which will no doubt be a talking point once the table is standing proudly in position. As with all items which we offer for sale it has been through our workshops, where our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture...
