About the Item

We are delighted to offer for sale this stunning very rare original circa 1830 J Kendell & Co Rosewood fold over games or tea table A rare and exquisite piece, highly collectable, the Rosewood patina is absolutely sublime, I have never seen cuts before with such a contrast between the light and dark Antique Furniture by J Kendall & Co cabinet makers J Kendall & Co were cabinet makers from Leeds, Yorkshire and who’s craftsmanship is seen to be on a par with that of Gillows. J Kendall stands for John Kendall who was established between 1783-1840 and is listed in the G.Beard & C.Gilbert, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, as an important Leeds maker. J Kendall & Co was eventually taken over by the well known firm of Marsh and Jones, later to be called by their better known name Marsh, Jones and Cribb. From the 1830s J Kendall & Co adopted the policy of labelling furniture Amazingly there are two cabinet makers listed at J Kendall & Co in circa 1837 with the same last name of Shaw working in Leeds, one at Nevile St who was called James Shaw and the other at Ivory St called Joseph Shaw. They may have been family members who were brought up in the same trade. The craftsmanship of these pieces of furniture can be superb with very fine timbers used indeed. They did use simple woods like oak and mahogany but some of the best examples were in rosewood, very often solid rather than veneered like other pieces of the period. In terms of the condition the table when folded has some light colour variations due to age and sunlight, I can have this French polished perfectly for a small fee, I have left it as it is because its original Dimensions: Height 73.5cm Width 91.5cm Depth 45cm extending to 91.5cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point This item is available for collection from our Wimbledon warehouses SW19-3BE Condition: Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.
