About
Dating to the Late Renaissance or early Baroque period (1600’s), this handsome Italian table was hand-carved from walnut wood. Walnut was used quite often in the Late Renaissance, as it can be more easily worked by hand and is lighter than the oak wood that dominated earlier periods. Of course, it was also sought after because of its desirable graining and color.
All edges of the octagonal top on this table have subtle cavetto moldings. The apron has scrolled corbels at each corner, which sit on half plinths with step molding beneath. The craftsmanship is master level, as the transition of the plinths is near flawless. The remainder of the apron is comprised of molded rectangular panels.
The impressive bracket base of the table consists of four large, hand carved volute scrolls with wide monopodial feet adorned with acanthus leaves. The detail and proportion of the legs and paw feet exude an important and bold character as was often the case with the Italian center tables of the Renaissance. The center column terminates in a series of volute scrolls and downward facing leaves.
Our Italian walnut table is truly a magnificent example of the antique center tables which first appeared in Italy during the 1500s. The general shape and style of table would remain in favor for hundreds of years, with each being slightly different in design and scale. Today, this piece would make for an ideal center table in an entry or a gentleman’s library.
