19th Century, France Inlaid Wood Centre Table

About the Item

19th Century, France inlaid wood centre table This elegant centre table in inlaid wood was made in France in the early 19th century. The rectangular top has shaped and wavy sides bordered by a gilded bronze lingotière. Veneered in wood, expertly positioned to exploit the characteristic grain, it has a leather top with gold decorations in the center. The underside band is inlaid with exotic wood species with different colors whose combination creates landscapes with houses and trees inscribed inside wooden frames that follow the trend of the furniture. On the front there is a small drawer, with a chiselled and gilded bronze keyhole. The legs, veneered and inlaid, are graceful and arched and end with chiselled and gilded bronze tips. The coffee table is inspired by the models of the French cabinetmaker Charles Topino (born around 1742 - Paris ,15 December 1803), appointed master cabinetmaker in 1773. Its furniture is characterized by the inlay depicting still life, influenced by Oriental lacquered panels. His works are visible at the Palace of Versailles. This type of coffee table is particularly decorative and valuable for the type of veneering and inlays. It can be placed against a wall or, thanks to its center finish, placed in a living room or in a study, next to armchairs and sofas.
