About the Item

19th Century, Italian Center Table with Marble Top Giltwood Base This refined center table was crafted in Florence between the end of 18th Century and the early 19th century. In the style of the Grand Tour, it was one of those objects sought after by young European aristocrats traveling through Italy, meant to serve as mementos and as testament to the culture and art of the places they visited. It features a circular top decorated with inlays of fine and carefully selected marbles of high quality and varying colors, assembled in a radial geometric pattern. At the center, within geometric borders and a checkerboard inlay, is a figurative mosaic set against a black background, depicting a small bird on a branch with a butterfly. The high quality of the marble inlays is evident in the use of malachite for the butterfly’s wings and some of the bird’s feathers, as well as lapis lazuli—both precious stones typically reserved for particularly valuable objects. The top rests on a carved and gilded wooden base with a turned central shaft of circular section, a tripartite molded base adorned with full-round sculptural dolphins in Baroque style, their tails curving upward to create a dynamic effect. Between the dolphins are large scallop shells of Saint James. This highly refined and high-quality table, in addition to being a remarkable example of the style that spread during the Grand Tour and fascinated the European aristocracy, has a strong visual impact, is highly decorative, and can be easily placed in a variety of settings—even as a centerpiece in a room.
