About the Item
A very fine 19th century Satinwood centre table by Holland & Sons. The table is of finely figured Satinwood with a circular tilt-top above a baluster column with three S-scroll and leaf-carved legs, with the original disguised castors.

Holland and Sons, was first established as Taprell and Holland in 1803 in reference to its two founders. Following a brief period in which the firm was known as Taprell, Holland & Son c.1835-43, William Holland gained sole command of the firm after the retirement from the business of the senior partner, Stephen Taprell. From 1843 onwards they were known as Holland and Sons and were quick to obtain numerous exclusive and significant commissions, as well as working for important clients. Indeed by 1851, when the company was based in Mount Street and employed 351 people, Queen Victoria had already commissioned the execution of numerous exceptional pieces of furniture for the Royal households of Balmoral, Sandringham, Windsor and Osborne House.
During the latter half of the 19th century, Holland and Sons also supplied furniture for such notable London clubs as the Athenaeum, the Reform club and the Oxford and Cambridge club. On top of furnishing a number of government buildings, the firm also supplied pieces for various British and European exhibitions, including the famous Great Exhibtion of 1851. Their output included works in a vast array of revival styles ranging from Louis XV, Louis XVI and Neoclassical, Elizabethan and Gothic, to name but a few. Sadly in 1942 they terminated trading altogether. The above lot is most likely one executed by Holland and Sons during the peak early Victorian period of their productivity and renown.

Holland & Sons
One of the most influential and successful British furniture manufacturers of the Victorian era, Holland & Sons was renowned for its superb quality. It would be difficult to find collectors unfamiliar with Holland — or its rival, Gillows of Lancaster and London — as the company was a leader in neoclassical and Gothic furniture and interior design in the early to mid-1800s, using only the richest of hardwoods and the finest of metals. Antique Holland & Sons chairs, storage cabinets and tables frequently featured rare-specimen wood marquetry and engraved ivory inlays. The manufacturer’s designs grace the collections of museums around the world and can still be found in the royal homes of Europe.
Two cabinetmakers, Stephen Taprell and William Holland, opened a small joinery in 1815 near Buckingham Palace in London, England, and named it Taprell & Holland. Holland was a relative of the acclaimed Regency architect Henry Holland, the famous gardener and landscape architect Lancelot "Capability" Brown, and the former Member of Parliament Richard Bateman-Robson. This familial edge provided the needed influence for the company among the aristocracy, and their business saw immediate prosperity.
The firm traded under the name Taprell, Holland & Son for a period, and when Taprell retired in 1843, Holland took over the company and changed the name to Holland & Sons. Holland decided to diversify and began offering a broad range of services to the very wealthy — arranging furniture and household decoration rentals, managing funerals and even providing plumbing services. By 1851, they employed over 350 people.
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert commissioned Holland & Sons to supply the entire furnishings of their private homes — Osborne House, Balmoral Castle, Sandringham House and Marlborough House. The Monarch’s satisfaction with Holland and Son’s furnishings led to the company being granted the Royal Warrant of Appointment, affording the owners the opportunity to display the coveted “By Appointment of HM The Queen” mark and her Coat of Arms above the entrance to their offices.
Other Holland & Sons furniture commissions of note include the London Union Club, the Athenaeum Hotel in London, Arundel Castle in West Essex and the All Souls College in Oxford. The firm was also involved in the funerals of Prince Albert and the mother of Queen Victoria — both in 1861 — and contributed works to the 1901 coronation of Edward VII when they made the throne for his wife, Queen Alexandra.

Artists Biography:
Edwards & Roberts was founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp. Edwards & Roberts specialized in marquetry, inlay and ormolu. Edwards & Roberts was one of the principal London companies working in the taste of the late 18th century. They started business in 1845 and by 1854 were trading as "Edwards & Roberts, 21 Wardour Street, Antique and Modern Cabinet Makers and Importers of Ancient Furniture". The circular tilt top having a finely chosen cuts of book-matched West Indian satinwood veneer with a rosewood banded and moulded edge over a splayed in-curved quatroform base, terminating on four acanthus carved scrolled rosewood lions paw feet raised on brass castors.
A very fine table with wide cuts of satinwood which would have been extremely expensive in the early 19th Century. Inspired by the French Empire design as viewed through the lens of English Regency, in particular the designs of Thomas Hope of 1807, along with the construction all point to Henry Thomas Peters being the maker, active in Genova around 1820 to 1850, being one of the leading cabinet makers of the period obtaining the title of ‘cabinetmaker of his Majesty’.
Henry Thomas Peters’ English antecedents remain obscure although he probably began his career in England. However, he is not listed in Beard and Gilbert’s Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840. He arrived in Genoa in circa 1817, and by 1824 had established a workshop in Via Balbi, a neighbourhood in which the Royal Palace and other noble residences were located; today some of his works are preserved in the Palazzo Rosso, Genoa and were probably bequests from the various aristocratic families for whom he worked, including the Brignole Sale family.
Peters was appointed by the Court of Savoy and produced furniture for their palaces in Turin, Genoa and Racconigi including the Palazzo Reale. Notably, in 1841, furniture for the wedding of Prince Vittorio Emanuele. In 1846, Peters and his extensive workshop won the silver medal at the Esposizione dei Prodotti e delle Manifatture Nazionali. As pointed out Peters was famed for producing furniture with the technical accuracy typical of English but adapted to the late Italian Empire style.
