Antique Giltwood and Scagliola Circular Table, after Della Valle Brothers
About the Item
This wonderful table is designed after the famous Della Valle brothers (Italian, fl. mid-19th century). The brothers were exceptionally skilled craftsmen who specialised in the production of scagliola (imitation marble) furniture. They were based in Livorno on the Ligurian coast in Italy.
The table features a circular scagliola top which is decorated with a coastal village scene. This depicts a mother and her daughter and a young woman at a well. This image is contained within an oval medallion which is encircled by a black band, decorated with golden-yellow stylised scrolled foliage. The tabletop is edged with giltwood which is carved with strap work.
The circular top is supported on a central turned giltwood column and three giltwood legs carved in the shape of semi-nude satyrs. These supports are set on a giltwood tri-form base, which is decorated with foliage and strap work carvings, and set on three feet in the form of Grotesque masks.
