About the Item

This early 19th century square table from northern China expresses Ming-dynasty tastes with clean lines and a simple silhouette. The table stands on four straight legs stabilized by giant’s arm braces and topped with scrolled spandrels carved in the form of auspicious clouds. Crafted of northern elm (yumu) with mortise-and-tenon joinery, the table is minimally decorated and darkened by a rich brown lacquer finish. The square top is slightly overhung and inset with a burl wood panel that contrasts the dark lacquer finish with light brown color. The lacquer finish has aged beautifully with time, with cracked texture and wear to the top. Originally used as a game table for dice, cards, or mahjong, this square table is ideal today as a center table in a foyer or sitting room. Deaccessioned from the MacLean Collection of Asian Art.
