About the Item

A gorgeous burl walnut tilt top table with an oval edge standing on a pedestal base from England, circa 1865. This table was originally placed in a drawing room or library where its ability to be easily moved where it was needed and the ease in which the top can be raised to a vertical position to take up less space perfectly fitted the life of a 19th century English family. Meals could be taken at the table or a game of cards played or any number of solitary or group activities engaged in at amy time of day. Please notice the exceptional grain of the burl walnut used across the entire expanse of the oval top. The matching pattern known variously as "book matched' or "butterfly" walnut indicated the luxurious quality of the table as well as the affluence of the home where it was used. The perimetre of the edge has a lovely slight ogee profile and the recessed apron beneath the oval top provided both superior stability to the structure as well as a pleasing visual finish. The bold column that supports the top has a profile notable for its vase form embellished with an expanse of raised lobes that extend around the entire circumference. In order to achieve a solid base for the table there are four spread legs that connect to the base of the column and these are placed equidistantly around the column to provide visual balance and symmetry. Please notice the voluptuous quality of the both the shape of the legs as well as the superb decorative carving that enhances the top surface of each leg as well as the grooved profile that emphasizes the curve from the column all the way to the end of each foot. The table is elevated by the original brass caster and wheel under the end of each leg that are each entirely free rolling. This ability to freely move about a space was an integral part of the function of furniture like this table as it would often be placed closer to the fire in winter and then near an open window in the summer. The scale of this table makes it an excellent breakfast table as well as a very handsome game table for life now.
