Fine and Rare George II Mahogany Galleried Octagonal Table

This fine, larger than usual, George ll-period table has a baluster-galleried octagonal top supported on a birdcage, allowing the top to both swivel and tilt. Note the fine, tapering, fluted column continuing into a carved collar. The well-drawn cabriole tripod base is foliate-carved at the knees and toes.
Of lovely old colour and patina throughout and in original condition. The spindle gallery has a rare and original feature of elegant brass 'spacers' with slightly protruding brass studs. Note the one piece, beautifully-figured top.
Vis. A similar tripod table from the Percival Griffiths Collection is illustrated in R.W. Symonds 'English Furniture from Charles ll to George ll' (1929) fig. 152.
Another was sold from the Frederick Howard Reed Collection by Christies on 16th November 1955.

A Fourth quarter, 18th century mahogany octagonal rotating top library rent table with molded edge and later green leather lining, with an octagonal shaped central hinged top well with slide lock. The interior wells has a false side that conceals a secret compartment, (probably for hiding money) above eight inlaid lettered drawers A-Z, on square pedestal base with door enclosing one fixed shelf, with recessed brass casters on square molded base. (3 keys included. One for base, two for draws.) Leather stained. Otherwise, the piece is structurally sound and in good antique condition, with wear commensurate a with age and use. Fabulous quality antique English George III honey colored highly figured mahogany Queen Anne style tripod tilt-top tea table. Please note the top was made from a rare and unusual highly figured single board! The top was gradually lightened to its gorgeous honey-colored patina through being exposed to light versus the base and pedestal being a bit darker since the top acts like an umbrella to shield the base from the sun and light.
Also note the handsome turned pedestal and cabriole legs ending in period pad feet. It retains its original steel strap over the dovetailed connection of the three cabriole legs as well as the original solid elm block upon which the top "snaps" onto.
