Period High Renaissance Walnut Wood Octagonal Center Table from Northern Italy,

About the Item

Dating to the high Renaissance period (1500s), this rare antique Italian table with octagonal top, was the precursor to the widely popular center table. Highlighting the angles of the top are four inlaid linear moldings surrounding the outermost edges. A frieze of gadrooned fluting is beneath the top, and under this are triangular openings between the brackets (top is removable). There is the central square base with richly carved ornamentation, resting on thick lion paw feet. The table also severs as a storage vessel, accessed by a front door with original iron handle. The panels are surrounded by foliate moldings, while 8 male and female herms flank each corner of the base. This carving style and ornamentation is consistent with the tastes of Northern Italy during the 1500s. Provenance: This table was imported to the United States in either the late 1800s or early 1900s. It was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Edward Harkness, and is featured in a photograph dating to 1908, as seen on page 174 of Great Houses of New York 1880-1930, Michael C. Katherens, Acanthus Press New York: 2014. See photo below, courtesy of the Museum of the City of New York. The home was designed by famed architect James Gamble Rogers, and of course, the style was based on Italian Renaissance. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Professionally restored in 2016 while keeping it consistent with the age of High Renaissance Italy (1500s). Scratches, nicks, minor losses to wood, age separations, old wormwood. Beautiful patina and very sturdy. Please inspect photos.
