Middle Victorian Side Table England Third Quarter 19th Century

About the Item

Tray table , England second half of the 19th century. Made of finely chiseled and gilded bronze with papier maché top. Four uprights in the form of a winged dragon with goat's foot, joined together by cross with pinnacle support an embellished top but gilded bronze applications in rocaille taste. The tray is signed "Jennet & Bettridge London" surmounted by a crown. It is one of the most important manufacturers of furniture and objects made of papier maché, a company that exhibited in the most important unicersal exhibitions of the 19th century. On the cover of the book "japanned papier maché and tinware" is a drawing from the 1851 World's Fair, depicting Jennens & Bettridge's booth itself.
