Virgil Abloh Modular Imagination Table For Cassina
Virgil Abloh and Cassina design a project that explores the implications of modularity in contemporary interior design. Blocks in two sizes that can stand alone or be combined to create design accessories, from a seat to a table-top surface.
Design ottomans, benches or coffee tables. Modular Imagination communicates the theme of modularity ‒ an invitation to play with one’s imagination to create new domestic landscapes and functions. A project that combines Abloh inspiration and originality with Cassina quality and production expertise.
Modular Imagination takes inspiration from the design values of the great masters, like Le Corbusier, while engaging with key topics in contemporary design, like sustainability. Thanks to the work conducted by Cassina LAB, the product’s components can easily be disassembled at the end of its life cycle.

In polyurethane with a percentage of polyols deriving from biological sources with an organic percentage, coated with painted elastomer.

In 2020 – a year prior to his untimely death in November of 2021 – the American fashion designer and entrepreneur began to explore with Cassina the implications of modularity, a pivotal theme in contemporary design. Building on the idea that active, playful participation in the arrangement of space by those who live with the furnishings should correspond to their own needs and habits, Abloh created the Modular Imagination design project: a geometric, stand-alone base unit, available in two sizes, for building worlds that are always new and suited to both private and public settings. The deceptively rigid matte black appearance conceals an unexpected softness that makes Modular Imagination a seat, as well as a table-top surface. A special connector allows the two pieces to overlap so the orange feet can lock into the top of the underlying block, yielding multiple optional uses – as an ottoman, a bench or a table.
While sharing values similar to those that resulted in masterful icons like the Tabouret by Le Corbusier, Modular Imagination symbolises the expression of how, in a versatile world, we can best live in a modern home. Thanks to the work conducted by Cassina LAB, the product’s components can easily be disassembled at the end of its life cycle. A broken line, located under the feet, indicates the place in which the soft polyurethane – with a percentage of polyols derived from biological sources – can be cut, separating it from the recycled wood structure to facilitate proper recovery and recycling of the elements at the end of its life cycle.
Remaining absolutely faithful to the work of Virgil Abloh, Modular Imagination becomes part of the Cassina catalogue as another of the creative’s quality contributions to the world of design. The reference to Virgil Abloh’s graphic design studio is likewise apparent in these unique design elements, thanks to the distinctive round ‘Cassina-Abloh’ logo, reproduced in bas-relief on every surface.

About the Designer:
Born in Rockford, Illinois, Virgil Abloh was an artist, architect, engineer, creative director, artistic director, industrial designer, fashion designer, musician, DJ and philanthropist. After earning a degree in civil engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he completed a Master’s degree in architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), Chicago. At IIT, while studying a design curriculum devised by Mies van der Rohe, Abloh began to craft the principles of his art practice. The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago presented a major traveling survey of Abloh’s work in summer 2019—one of the highest attended exhibitions in the museum’s history. Abloh was the Chief Creative Director and founder of Off-White™️ and Men’s Artistic Director at Louis Vuitton.

Virgil Abloh
By the time he celebrated his 40th birthday, Virgil Abloh had, seemingly, triumphed in every corner of the fashion and home design worlds.
In 2013, having already worked for Fendi and partnered with Kanye West, he founded the Milan-based streetwear house Off-White. Four years later, he released the first Off-White furniture line, Grey Area. In 2018, he became the artistic director of Louis Vuitton's menswear division, making him one of the first Black designers to head a French luxury fashion house.
Yet even with the Off-White and LV jobs, Abloh had time for a seemingly endless list of collaborations: designing shoes for Nike and Jimmy Choo, making furniture for Vitra and Ikea (“a super-dream project”), creating art with Takashi Murakami and Jenny Holzer, dressing Serena Williams and Beyoncé, co-branding with Levi’s and Evian, deejaying at Coachella and Lollapalooza.
Abloh's process was incredibly innovative — he explained that if he was inspired by an object, he didn’t want to alter it any more than necessary. “I’m only interested in editing an idea or a concept by three percent,” he said. Not surprisingly, he flirted with the limits of permissible appropriation. His first clothing line consisted of flannel Ralph Lauren shirts on which he printed the word “Pyrex.”
And his collaboration with Vitra included a version of Jean Prouvé’s Antony chair that has Plexiglass where Prouvé used plywood. In 2017, the Belgian designer Raf Simons told GQ that Abloh’s work was unoriginal. A month later, Abloh presented an Off-White collection cheekily titled Nothing New.

The historic Rio design low table combines uncommon beauty and utmost functionality in an asymmetrical structure that, over time, has proven itself to be a true interior decor work of art.
Thanks to Cassina’s outstanding artisan skills, the model from 1962 has been reissued in its original form, alternating the use of oak with inserts in Viennese cane, with versions in stained or natural wood with elements in white or black marble.
The low table by Charlotte Perriand is composed of six segments of different radius, arranged in a circle but offset from one another to create an uneven outer border in solid wood with a hole in the center, envisioned as a spatial center of gravity.

About the designer:
Charlotte Perriand full membership of that avant-garde cultural movement which, from the first decades of the twentieth century, brought about a profound change in aesthetic values and gave birth to a truly modern sensitivity towards everyday life. In this context, her specific contribution focuses on interior composition, conceived as creating a new way of living, still today at the heart of contemporary lifestyle.
In the sphere of 20th century furnishing history, the advent of modernity made possible the entrepreneurial audacity of this true reformer of interior design. At the beginning of her professional career she was acclaimed by critics for her Bar under the roof, exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in 1927 and constructed entirely in nickel-plated copper and anodized aluminium. In the same year, when she was just twenty-four years old, she began a decade-long collaboration with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, at the famous design studios at 35, rue de Sèvres in Paris.
