About the Item

A table gathers. It anchors daily rituals, defines intimate spaces, creates moments of pause. The Long John coffee table by Edward Wormley, Model 4699, understands this fundamental truth and expresses it through a language of profound simplicity that feels as fresh today as it did in 1946. Original Design Philosophy Some designs are too good to remain in the archive. The Long John table, originally conceived by Edward Wormley in 1946 during his most exploratory period at DUNBAR, has been meticulously reissued as part of our commitment to preserving and celebrating American design heritage. The year 1946 saw America emerging from wartime austerity, hungry for both comfort and progress. Wormley responded not with ostentatious luxury but with something more profound: honest materials, thoughtful proportions, and a warmth that distinguished American modernism from its more austere European cousins. Distinctive Design Elements What makes the Long John endure is its masterful balance of rusticity and refinement. Wormley deliberately specified solid American walnut planks with their sapwood and pin knots intact. These natural variations, far from being flaws, become the signature, ensuring that no two pieces are ever quite identical. The bent laminate hairpin legs represent a technical innovation that Wormley pioneered at DUNBAR. Each leg is formed from multiple thin layers of walnut, laminated under pressure to create curves that solid wood could never achieve. Material Poetry and Construction Select American walnut is hand-selected not for uniformity but for character. The sapwood creates ribbons of blonde through the darker heartwood, while pin knots add punctuation marks that remind us this was once a living tree. The planks are meticulously joined using precision biscuit joinery, creating a top that will remain stable through decades of seasonal movement. The surface is finished with conversion varnish calibrated to a precise 20-degree sheen, enough to protect and enhance the natural beauty without creating an artificial gloss that would mask its tactile warmth. This is furniture meant to be touched, to develop the patina that comes only from daily use. Authentic Reissue Process Working from the DUNBAR archive with original drawings, production notes, and carefully preserved examples from 1946, our craftsmen in High Point, North Carolina recreate not just the form but the spirit of the original. This is resurrection, not reproduction. Living With the Long John At just 12 inches high, the Long John table embodies how people actually live. This sumptuously low profile invites gathering around rather than across, creates intimacy rather than barrier. Available in widths from 48 to 84 inches, it adapts to spaces from urban apartments to sprawling living rooms. Generational Longevity This is furniture designed not for seasons but for generations. The solid walnut top, properly cared for, will serve 6+ generations. Minor scratches and watermarks become part of its story, evidence of dinners shared, homework completed, feet propped up with a good book.
