About the Item

A table gathers. It defines space, creates community, anchors daily rituals. The Model 870 Coffee Table by Edward Wormley understands this fundamental truth and expresses it through form, material, and meticulous craft—yet with a restraint that speaks to Wormley's confidence as a designer. Conceived in 1949 during Wormley's most innovative period at DUNBAR, the Model 870 emerged from his belief that modern furniture should complement, not dominate, the spaces it inhabits. The elongated oval form—stretching an impressive 72 inches—was deliberately proportioned to accompany the era's new, longer lounge seating while maintaining visual lightness through its slender 17-inch depth. This is furniture designed for the way people actually live: gathering for conversation, spreading out the Sunday papers, or displaying cherished objects along its generous surface. What distinguishes the Model 870 is the harmonious marriage of warm wood and architectural brass—a pairing that exemplifies Wormley's philosophy of "good design for good living." The solid hardwood top, whether in select American walnut with its rich chocolate grain or white ash with its pronounced cathedral patterns, is meticulously constructed using precision biscuit joinery. Each board is hand-selected for grain consistency and color, then joined with invisible precision to create a seamless surface that appears carved from a single, impossible piece of timber. The solid brass base provides both structural integrity and visual poetry. Rising from walnut feet that echo the warmth of the top, the brass framework creates an architectural presence that grounds the piece while allowing the eye to move freely beneath it. This interplay of materials—the organic warmth of wood against the refined gleam of brass—demonstrates Wormley's mastery of proportion and his understanding that great design lies in the dialogue between elements. Hand-crafted in our High Point, NC workshop using the same methods employed when Wormley first designed it, the Model 870 is finished with either a conversion varnish that brings out the wood's natural luster or a hand-rubbed oil finish that deepens and enriches with age. The varnish option, with its subtle 20-degree sheen, provides enduring protection while allowing the wood's character to shine through. Those who choose the oil finish participate in the piece's evolution, their periodic care rewarded with a patina that tells the story of decades of gathering. This is furniture built to serve generations—not through mere durability, but through a timeless relevance that transcends decorative trends. The Model 870 adapts as gracefully to a contemporary loft as to a mid-century ranch, as fitting in a formal living room as in a casual family space. With proper care, it will anchor conversations and daily life for three or four generations, developing the rich patina and subtle wear patterns that distinguish heirloom pieces from mere furniture.
