About the Item

A round curly birch-veneered “Annika” coffee table designed by Bruno Mathsson and produced by Dux in Sweden. The table has a light, functional form with a circular top and slender, tapered beech legs. The curly birch veneer shows expressive, flame-like grain patterns, lending warmth and unique character to the minimal design. The “Annika” series was designed in the 1960s, during a period when Mathsson was refining his approach to democratic, functional furniture for modern living. His work with Dux combined industrial production with elegant forms, making pieces that were practical, durable, and timeless. Mathsson remains one of Sweden’s most influential designers, celebrated for his ability to balance ergonomics and modernist aesthetics. Compact and versatile, this table works equally well in living rooms, reading corners, or as a centrepiece in smaller interiors. Its clean form and natural materials align with the Scandinavian mid-century ethos of function and clarity. • Height 41.5 cm (16.3 in), Diameter 65 cm (25.6 in) • Curly birch veneer top, beech legs • Model: “Annika” • Designer: Bruno Mathsson • Manufacturer: Dux • Period: 1960s • Made in Sweden • Very good vintage condition, wear consistent with age and use ABOUT THE DESIGNER Bruno Mathsson (1907–1988) was a leading Swedish designer and architect, known for his pioneering work in bentwood, ergonomic seating, and functional furniture. By Bruno Mathsson
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Bruno Mathsson for Karl Mathsson, coffee table, model 'Annika', ash, Sweden, 1950s. This coffee table, named 'Annika', is complemented with bent plywood with ash veneer legs executed in a fluently curved and tapered manner. These light legs are elegant and give this piece its unique appearance. The top is exquisite, the rounded edges really finish the table beautifully. Bruno Mathsson (1907-1988) was born in Sweden as the son of a cabinetmaker. His interest in architecture and furniture design developed early in his life. From his first designs on Mathsson was eager to use new, innovative techniques and soon became specialist in bending of laminated wood. In 1937, he was represented at Expo Paris where he won the Grand Prix for his bed called ‘Paris’. This Expo helped Mathsson to get known worldwide. The manager of the MoMA design department got interested in his designs and started to collect and exhibit his pieces. Moreover, he did collaborations per example with Piet Hein and together they developed the ‘Superellipse’ table...
