About the Item
This elegant antique French coffee table was crafted around 1880 and represents a beautiful example of the transitional period between the late Louis Philippe style and the early Belle Époque. The piece combines the refined elegance of 19th-century French craftsmanship with a balanced, understated form.
The base is made entirely of solid walnut, featuring gently curved cabriole legs that end in delicately shaped feet — a subtle reference to the Baroque tradition that came back into fashion during the 19th century. The top is veneered with quarter-sawn walnut, revealing a distinctive, shimmering grain pattern known as the quarter figure or walnut mirror. This type of cut exposes the wood’s most expressive character, with fine linear structure and a soft, satin sheen.
The walnut wood (Juglans regia, European walnut) was highly prized in France for its warm, dark-brown tone and its dense, even texture. Its hardness combined with ease of carving made it a favorite material among cabinetmakers throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.
This table is relatively large in size, and its warm, deep-brown patina gives it both substance and elegance.
In our workshop, the table was carefully cleaned and finished with a fresh layer of wax, restoring the natural luster and depth of the walnut’s color.
A timeless piece that fits beautifully in either a classic or eclectic interior, where the subtle French elegance and rich character of walnut wood can truly shine.
