Antique Japanese 'Shou Sugi Ban' Low Cedar Coffee Table, 19th Century
About the Item
An extraordinary 19th century antique Japanese low table constructed from an incredible and substantial, old growth cedar plank, with 4 out swept legs. This piece was made in Japan, likely in the late 1800s to 1900.
The table is finished with a technique called "Shou Sugi Ban", a Japanese technique of preserving wood. The surface is charred with fire and then sanded back to a smooth surface. The technique has been used to dramatically enhance the appearance of the table's surface, accentuating the swirling grain of the cedar. Making this table even more stunning are the three masterfully inlayed bowties and the large dark know which is carefully off-centered. A truly wonderful and seriously old example of this traditional Japanese design. The table has no no nails or screws. It is all dowel and joint construction. That said, all joints have been glued and stabilized and the table is fantastically sturdy. The wood is so smooth to the touch, and is enhanced by a soft, glowing patina which only comes from many decades of use.

- Shou Sugi Ban Side TableBy Bertu FurnitureLocated in Oak Harbor, OHPlease scroll down to read IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT OUR STUMPS before purchase! Originating in 18th century Japan, shou sugi ban is a particularly striking method of preserving wood by charring it with fire. Traditionally, this practice is used with Japanese cedar in order to weatherproof it. The wood is burned until the surface is charred, and then coated with natural oil. Why buy our stumps? KILN DRIED Our stumps all go through a drying process in our kiln, sometimes for up to a month. We are meticulous with bringing each and every log to a specific moisture level. This process helps with major cracking, long-term moisture issues, and bugs. ECO FRIENDLY In an effort to replenish the trees we use, we plant 50+ trees a year. In addition, we practice salvage logging. Where do we source these? Some of the trees fall naturally. Some have damage from severe wind, lightning, flood, disease, or other natural disturbance so they need to be cut and removed before they fall. Others are fresh cut because people want them off their land. Salvage logging may reduce erosion, reduce intensity of future wildfires, and slow buildup of pest insects. FAMILY OWNED These are made from our family to yours. Quality is of utmost importance, and we hand cut, de-bark, sand, and finish every piece with care. COMMERCIAL GRADE These stumps are meant to be loved and USED. Each is finished with a durable commercial-grade finish. This finish is tough enough for spills, kids, and holds up in hotel and hospitality settings. This Shou Sugi Ban side table...Category
