Black ‘Shou Sugi Ban’ burned solid Navé Cross 94 coffee table by Tim Vranken

About the Item

This sculpture is obtained through extensive research into the properties of Yellow Pine. It consists of ellipses, which are sawn against the grain so that the characteristic wood grain of Yellow Pine is made visible. This specific wood texture is created by the play between the flaming plain sawn wood and striped quarter sawn wood. Then the age-old technique of ‘Shou Sugi Ban’ is applied to the furniture. A technique in which the wood is burned and thus charred. Again, Yellow Pine forces a unique result, because the difference in softness between its spring and summer wood is so intense. This creates a deep structure and a subtle hue in brown, black and even gold. This furniture is interesting to behold and experience from every point of view. Each side reflects a different feeling and a different composition. Tim Vranken is a Belgian furniture designer who focuses on solid, handmade furniture. Throughout his designs the use of pure materials and honest natural processes are paramount. The result is an unconcealed interplay of lines and shapes, without the slightest frills. To make sure the furniture meets up to all of his ideas, Tim builds every piece himself.

And not to mention, it's absolutely gorgeous. This original center table was design by Ernesto Duran, who wanted to express how this world lockdown has allowed nature to take back its place in our planet. Shou Sugi Ban Burned Black Stumps
By Bertu Furniture
Located in Oak Harbor, OH
Please scroll down to read IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT OUR STUMPS before purchase! Originating in 18th century Japan, shou sugi ban is a particularly striking method of preserving wood by charring it with fire. Traditionally, this practice is used with Japanese cedar in order to weatherproof it. The wood is burned until the surface is charred, and then coated with natural oil. Why buy our stumps? KILN DRIED Our stumps all go through a drying process in our kiln, sometimes for up to a month. We are meticulous with bringing each and every log to a specific moisture level. This process helps with major cracking, long-term moisture issues, and bugs. ECO FRIENDLY In an effort to replenish the trees we use, we plant 50+ trees a year. In addition, we practice salvage logging. Where do we source these? Some of the trees fall naturally. Some have damage from severe wind, lightning, flood, disease, or other natural disturbance so they need to be cut and removed before they fall. Others are fresh cut because people want them off their land. Salvage logging may reduce erosion, reduce intensity of future wildfires, and slow buildup of pest insects. FAMILY OWNED These are made from our family to yours. Quality is of utmost importance, and we hand cut, de-bark, sand, and finish every piece with care. COMMERCIAL GRADE These stumps are meant to be loved and USED. Each is finished with a durable commercial-grade finish. This finish is tough enough for spills, kids, and holds up in hotel and hospitality settings. These Shou Sugi ban burned black stumps...
