  • Chinese Blonde Hide Storage Trunk, c. 1800
    Located in Chicago, IL
Trunks and storage chests were the most ubiquitous form of household storage throughout the Ming and Qing dynasties. Used to store clothes, linens, kitchen utensils, and other miscellaneous items, trunks were found in every room in the home and were often stacked on top of one another. This early 19th century storage trunk has a simple, rectangular form, wrapped in a layer of softly worn hide and accented by a square brass lock plate decorated with double coins and subtle floral motifs. Likely originally coated in dark oxblood-brown lacquer, the hide exterior has been stripped and bleached to a neutral, pale blonde color. The interior is lined with colorful fabric printed with pink...

    Located in Atlanta, GA
A Chinese leather-wrapped wooden trunk with brass and nail-head accents from the 19th century, and raised on a vintage wood stand. This coffer from China has a rectangular-shape body, decorated with brass banding nicely outlining and defining the edges, brass nail-head stud accents, and pulls at either short end. The brass is a wonderful contrast to the warm, patina of the leather. It gains height by being raised and displayed upon a vintage wood base with squared legs and petite inward-turned feet. This 19th century Chinese raised trunk...
