Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, no outstanding flaws noticed only its beautiful age patina including nicks and dings. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 19th to Early 20th Century. This piece is Low… Large… and IN CHARGE!!! This is a fabulous antique Chinese Ming style waisted opium bed or Monumental sized low coffee table composed of a wonderful walnut toned solid hardwood bearing a beautiful wood grain and a gorgeous natural aged patina. The table is waisted under a marvelous rectangular planked top surface, and it features a discreet decorative detail of pierced slots surrounded by (1 piece!) raised wood beading in the waist. If you know about 1 piece beading, you know it means that it’s a LOT of time, attention to detail, and shows a concern for high quality in the piece!! Plus, it’s subtle, but oh-so-stunning!! The whole table is raised upon charming chow legs with intricately hand carved beading (also 1 piece!) between the legs and visible marks in the wood resulting from hand carving… talk about character!!! Now, IYKYK (if you know, you know) the history behind the Chinese Opium daybed, let’s just say, we aren’t recommending that activity, but to each their own. You would toss down a mattress of a non-specific size, sit down either solo or with a friend & enjoy conversation and “hence the name” indulge in whatever you decide to “put in your pipe!!” Well… as interesting as that may be, we think it would be even more awesome used as a coffee table! Now, at SIX feet long and FOUR feet wide… it’s a substantial piece to say the least!! And it’s attractive Asian flair will be GORGEOUS among many styles of décor whether Mid-Century Modern, Hollywood Regency, Chinoiserie, and many others!! It will be a fun conversation piece in your living or family room adjacent the sofa topped with books & magazines, remotes & entertaining accessories, a fabulous sculpture, or foliage and it bears a beautiful Chinese Ming style exuding a timeless presence you are sure to love for years to come. Don’t let this magnificent monumental low coffee table or charming Chinese Opium bed slip away! You simply MUST have it… Make it YOURS!!!!! Coffee Table w/Black Base & Biomorphic Glass Top Style Kroehler Pearsall or Tonk
By Adrian Pearsall, Kroehler Mfg. Co., Tonk Mfg. Co.
Located in Topeka, KS
Stunning vintage Mid Century Modern coffee table with a black painted wood base & a biomorphic or kidney shaped glass top in the style of Kroehler Pearsall or Tonk. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, it had a few nicks & scuffs on the black base so we gave it a fresh coat of black paint. The glass has one very small chip in edge (may be able to be sanded out) & normal scratching on surface for age. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1950’s. What a beautiful biomorphic BEAST!!!! WOW!!! This is a marvelous vintage mid-century modern style coffee table comprised of a black painted wood base and a biomorphic or kidney shaped glass top in the style of Kroehler, Adrian Pearsall, or Tonk Manufacturing Company. This savvy little coffee table certainly took us on a wild goose chase that I’m not sure is completely over! You can find this table all over the internet attributed to Adrian Pearsall. It is NOT designed by him. Of that we are sure. But definitely in his style so it is easy to see where the misattribution comes from. It is also attributed to Valentine Seever, which is not a single person but two last names. And it may have been promoted by them as they were a division of Kroehler Manufacturing Co. It has also been attributed to Tonk Manufacturing Co., best known for their antique piano and organ swiveling stools; but we have not found actual proof of that. My mother (a “veteran” vintage...
